About This Site

Top Camping Gear is written for people who camp a few weekends a year or more, at state parks, lake campgrounds and national forests, and want gear that holds up. We cover the core of a good campsite: tents, sleeping bags, camp stoves, lanterns and coolers. Every review comes from using the gear on real trips, through rain, wind and cold nights, and we say plainly what did not work as well as what did.

Camping Safety

Never run a propane stove, lantern, grill or heater inside a tent, camper shell or vehicle. These appliances produce carbon monoxide, which has no smell and can kill a sleeping person in an enclosed space. Cook and burn fuel outdoors, in open air, well away from the tent wall.

Keep open flames and hot stoves away from tent fabric, sleeping bags and dry grass, and let a stove cool fully before you pack it. Check propane fittings for leaks with soapy water, store cylinders upright and out of direct sun, and never leave a lit stove unattended.

Check the forecast before you go and know how to get to shelter. Strike your tent or leave it in high wind, and get to a hard-topped vehicle or building in a thunderstorm; a tent offers no protection from lightning. Pitch away from dead branches and low spots that collect water.

Temperature ratings on sleeping bags are lab estimates, not guarantees. Bring an insulated pad and extra layers, and know the signs of hypothermia, which can set in well above freezing when you are wet. Store food and coolers in a locked vehicle or as the campground directs where wildlife is active, and follow local fire restrictions at all times.
